Wardours

by Castle Rings

Samuel Holloway Stunning and intensely personal avante-folk that evokes acid trips in the countryside, white magic, and remote viewing through time and space. This EP feels like a daydreamy keepsake of fleeting, intimate and profound moments, fittingly released at a time of uncertainty and isolation. It's psilocybin, basically. Favorite track: Lights (Dead Riding Wood).

about

Welcome to the Wardours.

It started with a break-in back in 2004... Our ragtag group scaled the wall at Wardour Castle in Wiltshire hellbent on joy one balmy eve. It was a remarkable night for many reasons; setting a fire in the grotto, strumming on the ramparts, scaring the shit out of each other with scarlet capes and shadows in the room of the White Woman, but the best was that there were no tensions between us and no real cares about yesterday, today and tomorrow. We left at dawn with no physical trace of our presence, but sure it rests etched deep in all of us.

And now it's 2020 in Paris, a city just out of lockdown due to a global pandemic and my home for more than a decade. At a time when ugly populist fantasies are infecting societies across the world and technology drives us ever on towards total distraction, alienation and dehumanisation- it's so important to remember that we are made of each other.

This EP is a statement in honour of my friends and family. I involved as many of my loved ones as possible in its creation and each song is packed with markers plotting the journey from Wardour to these war doors.

So even though the worst may happen, you are there and I love you for it. This is for you.

released June 15, 2020

"Organic Player" features Matthew Kay on the flute and percussion by Sam Holloway. I played harmonium and guitar.

"Nature" was first composed in 2008 in Brixton with Cherry Franklin, Rachel Maclachlan and Francesca Allen. They all now appear on this completed version, recorded in various London dwellings over 2018. I also sang and played ukelele and recorder. Mixed by Greg Combet.

"Moonstones" features Sam Holloway on percussion and I played loops on guitar.

"Lights (Dead Riding Wood)" was made magical with beats from Sam Holloway. I sang and played guitar.

"Black Rainbow" painting by Oona Vardey.

Special thanks to Sam, the production hero, master of mediums and massive inspiration for Getting Things Done.

More special thanks to my noisemaking pals "Old" Greg Combet, "Basbags" Costa and "Neolithic" Gordon Wallace for their support and guidance in all things musical and beyond.

Eternal gratitude to my dearest Lola and Oona, the pilot lights of my life.
